Hey Circuit City, Where are all the Bargains?

As a follow up to our wonderful mall shopping experience our undercover shopping team visited a pair of local big box stores Best Buy and Circuit City to see what these stores have to offer notebook shoppers. We compared both their online and retail stores in terms of product selection and display, sales and service, and in-store notebook repairs and upgrades. We selected a pair of Best Buy and Circuit City stores in Mason, Ohio for our undercover shopping experience because both stores are literally located across the street from one another … making them prime targets for consumers looking for the best deal on notebooks. Shoppers can immediately expect one thing upon entering the notebook computer area of the sales floor … service before you even walk up to the first laptop. Our undercover shopping team experienced incredibly fast response from the Circuit City sales team. Unfortuantely, this is somewhat of a necessity for the salespeople because Circuit City chose to install proprietary software on all the notebooks … preventing shoppers from playing with the machines or getting a feel for real-world performance.

Circuit City

It seems as the new millennium rolled in, many older stores started changed and started to go downhill. Some of them went out of business completely. And one of the biggest stores that comes to mind is Circuit City. Circuit City was an American multinational consumer electronics retail store that sold everything from sold everything including software, video games, music, VHS, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, TVs, mobile phones, digital cameras, car stereos, video cameras, home appliances including washing machines, dryers, and refrigerators. It started out as Wards Company in , until it was renamed to Circuit City in and pioneered the electronics superstore format. At the time of liquidation, it was only the second largest electronics retail store in the U. Circuit City was one of my favorite stores to go to as a kid back in the s. It was a great place to shop for electronics like new computers, TVs, and radios. Back in the old hometown I used to live in back in the 90 s, we didn t have a Best Buy and places like Wal-Mart or Kmart didn t sell as many electronics so Circuit City was the best place for me to go to if I wanted to shop for electronics. But, what I miss most about Circuit City was the general atmosphere of the store.

The basic pattern that CompUSA closed brick-and-mortar stores in and Circuit City closed stores in followed was:

After filing for bankruptcy at the end of last year, the electronics giant announced in January that it was going out of business, and by March it had shuttered all of its stores nationwide, including nearly a dozen in New York. Now, five months after that shutdown, four sites in Manhattan and three in Brooklyn remain vacant. The spaces formerly occupied by Circuit City, which entered the New York market in and was one of a number of national mega-retailers to go belly up this year, are something of a case study of the New York City retail market. Three of the spaces have been leased, while other sites have sparked interest from national companies that have toured the stores. In May, P. Both stores are reportedly 31, square feet. While new tenants can expect to pay more than Circuit City did for spaces it leased in the s and early s, rents are down compared to what they were last year. The site has a ground-floor entrance but is primarily located on the second floor, and P. Richard and Tommy Hilfiger were previously mentioned as possible tenants. Joanna Rose, a spokeswoman for the Related Companies, which controls the site, said Best Buy would open in the fourth quarter of While Rose would not comment on rent figures early last month, Consolo, who is not working on the site, said Union Square has retained its rents better than most neighborhoods during the downturn because there are not many vacancies for large stores and because foot traffic is high there. But Consolo said any tenant renting such a large space would presumably get generous incentives from an owner, including some free rent and money toward building out the space. The landlord, Friedland Properties, is marketing the space.

Bargain hunters headed to Circuit City to take advantage of the retailer s liquidation sales take heed. We checked out a closeout sale in Norwalk, Connecticut earlier this week and found once we got past the signs screaming "30 percent off" there weren t a whole lot of bargains to be had. We did find some good deals, but far fewer than we had hoped. As you ve no doubt heard, Circuit City, the nation s second largest retailer, has gone belly up. We were hoping to find loads of great deals. While some of Circuit City s stock such as cables and wiring and DVD movies at the store we visited were marked down 30 to 20 percent, big tag items were only cut by 10 percent. Still, in this economic climate even a 10 percent off sale is welcome. To find out just how good the deals were at Circuit City we compared prices with four other big retailers - Best Buy, Amazon. The verdict? Our inner-bargain hunter was crushed when many sale items sold at Circuit City were no bargain at all. Let s take a look. Cameras not your thing? Some printers and iPods were worth braving the crowds for. But the best deals to be had were the iPods.
